Sandhill cranes fly in past the sliver of a moon to nest on Wednesday, March 14, 2013 during a Hays High School field trip to see the sandhill cranes at the Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary in Gibbon, Nebraska. In order to reach northern destinations as far away as Alaska, cranes must build up enough energy to complete their long journey and to begin breeding. The Platte River provides the perfect spot to rest, and the nearby farmlands and wet meadows offer an abundance of food.
